ART INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL is located in a major panchayat called Nazareth falling in Tiruchendur Taluk of Thoothukudi District in Tamilnadu in the Southern part of India situated at about 100km. North-East of the Southern tip of Indian Peninsula, Kanyakumari: Nazareth is at a distance of 48 kms from the nearby district headquarters and Deep sea port of Thoothukudi.
Hardly about a century and a quarter old, Art Industrial School came into existence in the year 1878. Tracing the historical process of its evolution, the great famine of the South India has to be recalled as the precursor. The relief operations launched by an S.P. MISSIONARY, REV. CANON ARTHUR MARGOSCHIS, among other things gave rise to the establishment of an Orphanage for tending the hundreds of children rendered destitutes due to the famine. The orphanage founded in the year 1877 paved the way for the emergence of the Art Industrial School in 1878 and it is no lesser than a mission embarked on to realise a vision.
Initiated with formal school system upto III standard, it accommodated other vocational trades such as gardening, tailoring and carpentry with a view to ensure a livelihood for the inmates. In the year 1900, the orphanage grew up to accommodate 283 inmates and the Art Industrial School offered technical training in 18 trades. These included carving, Carpentry, Masonry, Blacksmithy, Spinning, Weaving, Stitch-craft and such as those relevant to self employed. Presently the affairs of the school are managed by the board comprising of 17 members under the chairmanship of
Rt. Rev. Dr. J.A.D.Jeba Chandran
Thoothukudi – Nazareth Diocese
As of now, it has in its roll strength of 263 boys and girls getting vocational training.
Yet another attraction with the school is the Advanced Training in Tool & Die Making started in the year 1981.
